More Science

We've been enjoying our science activities lately. Last week we did some basic preschool "What sinks? What floats?" activities.

Here we tested tons of different objects from around the house to see if they would sink or float. Everyone got three turns testing. We always guessed before if we thought the object would sink or float. We learned that heavy things sunk and lightweight things floated. The Q-tip sunk because it absorbed water so quickly.

Then we learned that shape matters too. We tested two balls of playdoh that were identical in weight. (We made sure to measure on our scale) One ball we left as a ball and it sunk. Then I made the other into a boat and it floated. Then they all got turns seeing if they could make a boat to float.

Alia got her boat to float and even with "people" inside...

Of course we needed to play in the water after our experiment because it was so fun. We even made some bubbles.
Later that week we tested to see if salt added to water affects the freezing point.
It looks like my girls are turning into a bunch of "mad" scientists...

Today we learned about water pressure and did some fun experiments using water pressure. We learned that water pushes in all directions and tested that with cups and a hole punched in the bottom or side. We really tested water pressure with putting the cup IN the water. I realized afterwards the all the pictures I took are of them with their cups OUT of the water. Oh well...it was fun.

Great Day

Today was a beautiful sunny day filled with bike rides, a trip to the park, reading books, fun science experiments and getting ALL the jobs done on the responsibility chart.

For science we talked about density (the physics definition) and stratification in the ocean. We found that we could float a hard boiled egg in between a layer of salt water and a layer of fresh water.

Here's the fun pics...The floating egg up close...

Meet...

Meet my husband's cell phone.

It does not have a name yet. But we're thinking that now it should since it seems to have a personality of it's own. On the verge of being replaced thanks to our phone service's "new every two", this phone has developed a rather odd habit of calling people at random off of Aaron's "recently dialed" list. Yes the phone itself dials and calls on it's own. It usually happens right after Aaron opens the phone that it will just start dialing away. However...
Last night after Aaron had been home from work for over an hour (the cell phone sitting on our dresser) we hear our home phone ring. Aaron looks at the caller ID to see who's calling and sees that in fact he is calling himself. Or rather his phone is calling. It was kind of interesting for him to see his own phone number on the caller ID when he's not even near his cell phone. We figure the cell phone must have been getting lonely.

The "what we did" of the trip...

Playing in the snow with Aunt Tara. She's such a fun aunt!

Eating out at Won Won's Wok for Tasha's Birthday. We ordered tons of chinese food and sushi. It was so good.
CABELAS "Like no other retail store on Earth!" - It's true.

Cabela's is like the Disneyland for sportsman. They have incredible displays of stuffed trophy hunted animals and live fish displays of the biggest salmon and other fish (I forgot what other kinds there were) I've ever seen. It was fun for all ages.

Checking out the fish display.
"Where did the kids go?"
Sometimes it's so hard to keep track of kids in a store.

We basically got snowed in one day...so play doh to the rescue!
On the 23rd we went to Temple Square in SLC to see the lights. We also saw the movie in the Joesph Smith Memorial Building about the life of the Prophet. It was really good. The scenes with the mobs were a little intense for our girls, but the movie was a good experience for us to see.

The big Christmas tree in the Joseph Smith Memorial building.

The beautiful view

The lovely lights...

On this trip we got to see a lot of horses thanks to my wonderfully talented sister and her equally talented boyfriend. On the 24th we got to ride the horses at Lisa's work. My girls loved it. Even Aaron and I got to ride.

We also celebrated Christmas day in Utah.
